Helix Lamps
Date: 2025-11 | Duration: 6 weeks | Status: complete_in_use | Budget: $310Goal
Design and build helix-shaped adressable-wrgb IOT controlled decorative lamp
Requirements
Decorative lamp with full internet control, rgb coloring, and normal white light. Inspired by a lamp seen at costco for $100.
Result / Current Incarnation
I built two black lamps with polyethylene tube diffusers and two white lamps with printed diffusers.
The four lamps are currently in use daily, with automated scene lighting control. Cost per lamp comes out to $77.50 each, beating the example lamp by 25% with much better functionality.
Specifications
Decorative lamp featuring three entwined spiral arms.
Each arm contains 87 WRGB (White Red Green Blue) LED elements.
Lights are diffused through either clear polyethylene tubing or matte-white 3d-printed structure.
White lamps are printed entirely in "vase mode", resulting in a 0.4mm thick continuous wall with no seams or layers.
Each lamp base contains the controlling ESP-32 and a 5v20a power supply.
Custom programmable patterns; "rainbow" and "full-white" shown in gallery.
Power consumption: 30w at full natural-white phosphor only, 90w at full WRGB activation.
